Govee screen sync on a Mac: what your options actually are
Govee’s own desktop software is a Windows product, so Mac owners who want their lights to follow what is
on screen have to go a different way. There are three routes. They cost very different amounts and each one
gives something up — including the one this site sells.
Route 1: buy the hardware Govee makes for it
Govee’s own answer to screen sync is a device rather than software: a camera that clips to the top of your
TV, or an HDMI sync box that sits between your source and the screen. Both work without a computer, which
means they work with a Mac by not caring that it is a Mac.

Best for: a TV. Consoles, an Apple TV, a Blu-ray player — anything where no computer is
driving the picture. Software running on your Mac cannot see those signals at all, so this is genuinely the
only option there.

Costs you: another purchase on top of the lights. Camera kits need calibration and an
unobstructed view of the screen, and they struggle with bright rooms. HDMI boxes cap the resolution and
refresh rate that passes through them, which matters if you gamed for it.
- Does nothing for: the monitor you are actually working at.
Route 2: drive the lights over your local network
Many Govee lights expose a local network API. Once
LAN Control is switched on for a device, any app on the same Wi-Fi can send
it colour directly — no Govee account, no cloud, no API key, no extra hardware. A desktop app samples the
edges of your screen and pushes colour many times a second.
- Best for: a Mac or PC driving the display. Desk monitors, a Mac plugged into a TV, laptop screens.
- Costs you: the computer has to be awake and running the app. Close the lid and the sync stops.

Depends on: your specific model exposing the LAN API. Roughly 34 Govee models are known to
accept realtime colour this way — check yours here before buying anything.
This is what GLanSync does. It runs on macOS 13 and newer, on both Apple Silicon and Intel, with a native
Intel build rather than Rosetta, and there is a Windows build for the same lights if you have both machines.
Beyond screen sync it does music sync from the microphone or system audio, scenes, static colour, an

Where it is the weaker choice
Worth saying plainly, because it will save some people a download:

It is not notarized by Apple yet. macOS will claim the app is damaged the first time you
open it, and you have to step around that by hand. If that is a dealbreaker, it
should be, and no amount of explanation changes it.

Only one model is hardware-verified. The other 33 have their segment counts confirmed
against open-source projects rather than against the physical device. The
device list marks which is which rather than pretending they are equal.

Nothing it does helps a console or a TV with no computer attached. That is Route 1’s job.
Route 3: build it yourself
The LAN protocol is documented well enough by the open-source community that people already drive Govee lights
from scripts, from Home Assistant, and from projects like OpenRGB and SignalRGB. If you enjoy that kind of
thing it is free and endlessly adjustable.
- Best for: automation you want to own, or lighting tied to something other than the screen.

Costs you: screen sync specifically needs low-latency screen capture and colour processing
running constantly, and that is the part a shell script does not give you for free. Static colours and
schedules are easy; smooth realtime sync is the hard half.
So, which one
- You want your TV lit while a console or Apple TV plays. Buy Govee’s hardware — software on your Mac cannot see that signal.
- You want the screen you work or game on to drive the lights. The LAN route is cheaper and far more flexible.
- You want music reactivity too, or you are on an Intel Mac, or you also have a Windows machine. That is the gap GLanSync was built to fill.
